Wow, guess who forgot to post this when it was announced about 3 weeks ago? Well it’s actually been so long since I’ve posted that WordPress’ loadout has completely changed. Awesome. So back to the topic, a game I’ve been playing for more than 7 months and have around 850 hours of gameplay time is now free.
Some of you may remember me posting a poll asking if you had Team Fortress 2. The biggest result was that you’d get it later/cheaper. Well now that it’s free, you have no excuse. Basically what I’m going to do is give you an instruction guide on installation and gameplay. This might take a while.
First things first, you’ll need to install a program/online marketplace called Steam from here: http://store.steampowered.com/about/
When that’s done installing, run it and either find TF2 on the Store page or in the ‘search the store’ search bar and click install. This is a fairly big download so make sure you’ve got enough space on your computer/download limit.
Finally, when it’s installed, click on the library tab, then on TF2, then click the Play button.
Be aware that TF2 does have regular updates, so it can chew through your download limit fairly easily if you don’t have much.
Now, Steam also has a friends feature which allows you to keep track of friends and the games they’re playing. To add someone, open Steam and at the bottom right, there should be a friends feature. Click on that, then click ‘Add a friend’. My Steam ID is alphaclank if you want to add me. 🙂
Alright, back to TF2. I recommend doing the tutorials and looking at the options before playing. The tutorials would probably do a better job at explaining the gameplay than me anyway.
If you have got TF2 now that it’s free, you have a free account. There’s absolutely no difference between free and premium except that free accounts can’t get cosmetic items like hats. If you want to collect hats, you can get a premium account by making any purchase from the TF2 store. The cheapest item is a 50c Crit-A-Cola, but since your Steam wallet needs at least $5 in it, I’d recommend either buying 2 keys at $2.50 each or if you’re looking at another game in the Steam store for $4.50 or under, that and a TF2 item. If you’re not sure what to buy, send me a message on Steam (I’m almost always on :P) and I’ll get all the details on your situation to make the best decision possible. If you decide to upgrade, you’ll be asked who helped you the most. If you say I did, I get a free pair of glasses and that’d be appreciated. ;D
When choosing a server, I’d recommend going ‘Random’ in the ‘Start Playing’ section and getting used to different characters and maps, rather than selecting a server from a list. You’ll get used to it. 😛 Also, if I’m in a TF2 game, you can join me by clicking the Join Game button from the arrow of my name. Hope to see you in game!
I think I covered most of the important things. If I forgot something, I’ll make another post. Feel free to ask me any questions through the website or Steam chat. Have fun in TF2!
